Okay, so you have some questions about becoming a pilot. What qualifications do I need to get started? How long will it take? How much will it cost? What kind of certification should I pursue?
Qualifications
The FAA has a few simple requirements for earning a pilot certificate. While there is no minimum age to begin training, you must be at least 17 to earn your pilot certificate. (There is no maximum age limit.) You must be able to read, speak and comprehend English. Prospective pilots must be in good health. You need to meet some in-flight time requirements, pass a written knowledge test and, when you’re ready, pass a practical test with an FAA examiner. That’s it!
Investment of Time and Money
Most students need about six to seven months to log the hours required for certification. A number of factors can affect your individual timeline, including the amount of time you can devote to training. Costs vary as well; the type of aircraft, fuel costs and local conditions can all impact the total. In all, you can expect to invest $7,000 to $12,000 in getting your pilot certification.
Certification Types
There are several initial pilot certificates, each with their own privileges and restrictions. The most common are the private pilot and sport pilot. We offer both types of certification at Air Associates.
